The Lithuanian Mettis Quartet will take us for another musical journey. These students of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre from Vilnius have received many awards in musical competitions and taken part in numerous master classes. Their first recorded album presents their interpretations of musical pieces by Beethoven and Shostakovich, whose works they will also perform during our Festival. The concert will begin with a composition by their compatriot, M. K. Čiurlionis, one of the most widely renowned Lithuanian artists of the turn of the twentieth century, known not only as an accomplished painter and graphic artist, but also as a composer. His Quartet in C minor written in 1902 was composed of four parts, of which only the first three are extant. This will be followed by a piece by J. Haydn, composed in 1790, namely the famous Lark: this virtuoso composition, strictly following the model of a classical string quartet (sonata, slow movement, minuet, and the final movement), includes a melodious part for violin from which the piece takes its name. The second part of the concert will present the energetic and brilliant quartet by Beethoven (composed in 1800, when he was only thirty years of age). Finally, we shall listen to an uninterrupted performance of five-part Quartet no. 5 by D. Shostakovich; lasting for less than 25 minutes, it does bear many resemblances to the fully fledged symphony works by this composer.
