Michał Szymanowski – piano

From Austria through Poland and Russia to Norway: we shall have an opportunity to embark on this intriguing and multifarious musical journey with the young distinguished pianist Michał Szymanowski, who has taken part in numerous competitions and presented his skill by playing concerts in, among others, the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Japan, Switzerland and the Vatican. The Chamber Music Hall will be the setting for a lyrical programme composed of the most popular Romantic ballads. The recital will begin with one of the earliest ballads by J. Brahms (op. 10 no. 1) and the Ballad in G minor op. 24 by E. Grieg in the form of a musical theme and a cycle of variations. The final ballad to be presented during the recital will be the Ballad in F minor by F. Chopin, a greatly renowned masterpiece of this musical genre with its fully developed form, dramatic panache, and powerful thought-provoking lyrical expression. In a similar vein, this will be followed by Chopin’s Barcarolle in F sharp major op. 60, about which J. Iwaszkiewicz wrote: ‘it is an impressionistic landscape, one that produces feelings of katharsis and ecstasy’. The recital will end with a performance of early twentieth-century compositions: A. Skriabin’s ecstatic Sonata no. 4 in F sharp major op. 30, the shortest of all the sonatas by this composer, and the Variations in B flat minor op. 3, the juvenile, harmonically rich and virtuoso cycle of twelve pieces by K. Szymanowski.
